Project overview

The client is a large organization where quality, safety and environmental (QSE) processes involve thousands of employees. Parallel Web designed and built QSE Register, a central web application for these processes, and has maintained and developed it ever since. It is multilingual and used by teams in multiple countries.

The challenge

QSE processes depend on many people doing the right thing at the right time: reporting issues, assigning corrective actions, approving them and following up until they are closed.

Managed through a mix of documents, spreadsheets and email, these processes were hard to track. It was difficult to see the status of open items across the organization, to make sure actions were completed on time and to produce consistent reports for management.

The solution

We built a centralized web application that brings QSE processes into one system:

  • Workflow managementStructured workflows for recording, reviewing, approving and following up on items.
  • Roles and permissionsMultiple user roles, with access matched to each user's responsibilities in the organization.
  • Automated notificationsEmail notifications and reminders when items are assigned, due or overdue.
  • ReportingOverviews and reports that give management a consistent view of status across the organization.
  • SecurityAuthentication and authorization built into the architecture, with continuous security improvements over time.

In use

QSE Register home screen with the ticket list, quick links and reports
Home screen: the user's tickets, quick links to open actions and all reports in one place.
Tickets group report with filters, a status chart and totals by plant and department
Tickets group report: open and closed items by plant and department, broken down by type and rating.
Audit record with the audit summary, a finding and its corrective action
Audit record: summary, findings with classification, and the corrective actions that follow.

Technical approach

The platform is built on the Microsoft stack, chosen for long-term stability and a good fit with the client's environment.

  • .NET / ASP.NET
  • C#
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • JavaScript
  • IIS / Windows Server

Long-term engagement

The platform has been in production and under continuous development since its launch. Parallel Web maintains it, adds functionality as processes change, keeps the technology stack current and implements security improvements as requirements evolve.

For the client, this means one team that knows the system and its users in depth.

Outcomes

  • QSE processes centralized in one system
  • Clear visibility of open items and their status
  • Less manual administration and follow-up
  • Automated notifications instead of manual reminders
  • Easier, consistent reporting
  • Improved security
  • Scalable access for thousands of users
